BENEFITS OF THE ARTAS® PROCEDURE

Compared to the older strip hair transplant method, FUE procedures have greatly forwarded hair transplants. Although FUE is minimally invasive and causes minimal pain, the procedure itself can be quite lengthy, lasting around 8 hours. However, there is now an alternative treatment available called the ARTAS robotic system. This treatment is approved by the FDA and provides extreme precision for follicular unit extraction. The use of this system results in less trauma during graft harvesting and ultimately promotes better hair.

The benefits of the ARTAS robotic system are:

Affordable

More affordable treatment option for patients

Less Pain

Does not cause as much pain or discomfort as other treatment options

Minimal Downtime

Very minimal downtime after the procedure

FUE vs. FUT

FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANTATION (FUT)

Follicular Unit Transplantation, or FUT, is a hair transplant surgery commonly known as "strip" surgery. During this procedure, a surgeon removes a portion of the patient's scalp from the posterior scalp. The resulting area is then closed using stitches or staples. The removed strip of scalp is handed over to technicians who carefully dissect each individual follicular unit. These units are subsequently transplanted back into the patient's recipient area.

Pros:

Compared to Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), this type of hair transplant is quicker. With FUT hair transplant, a larger number of grafts can be removed in a single session. Finally, FUT has a higher graft survival rate, meaning the follicles have a higher rate of surviving because the grafts are dissected to optimum thickness. FUT is generally recommended for any-haired patients as the curled follicles can be seen clear enough for dissection under the scope.

Drawbacks:

The recovery period for this surgery usually spans a few weeks, during which patients may experience numbness, scalp tightness, and persistent pain. Moreover, there is a risk of developing a noticeable linear scar on the posterior scalp.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, works by extracting individual hair follicles from the donor area, primarily located on the back of the head. These follicles are then transplanted into the recipient areas one at a time.

The steps of the procedure start with the donor area being shaved. Then the individual hair follicles are extracted with a small, circular punch tool. The follicles are removed and transplanted to the recipient area. More details about the procedure are below.

Pros:

With follicular Unit Extraction transplant, the procedure leaves tiny, dot-like scars that are very hard to detect, supporting the name “scarless technique”. Compared to Follicular Unit Transplantation, the healing time is significantly shorter. After the procedure is completed, FUE is less discomforting. Finally, no linear scar can be seen, so this type of procedure is great for patients who prefer to keep their hair short.

Drawbacks:

The entire procedure for Follicular Unit Extraction can be time consuming because the follicles are individually extracted. This requires multiple, smaller sessions. Finally, if the transplant is not executed properly, there may be some possible damages to the follicles. FUE can lead to higher transection rates of follicles due to blind extractions. Also, greater care and maneuvers are needed to avoid transections in curly-haired patients.

FUE Procedure Steps

  • Consultation and Preparation

Your first step to a Follicular Unit Extraction is having a consultation with a hair transplant specialist. The doctor will examine your hair loss condition, the donor area, and talk to you about your goals with the procedure.

The provider will design a hairline that matches your facial structure. A personalized plan is then created, with the number of grafts estimated for the procedure.

A full medical review will be conducted, which includes information about any allergies, medical histories, and medications that are currently being used.

Once an agreement has been formed about the procedure, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for the surgery.

In most cases, the donor area will be shaved. This will help with the extraction process of the follicles.

  • Anesthesia

When the procedure begins, you will be given local anesthesia to both the donor and recipient areas. This will help the surgery be pain-free and over comfortable. In some cases, patients are given mild sedation to help with relaxation during the procedure.

  • Initial Extraction

A micro-punch tool is used to extract the individual hair follicles from the donor area. Once the hair follicles are extracted, they are transferred in a specialized solution to conserve their vitality. There are 1-4 hair follicles in each follicular unit. During the extraction process, the goal is to minimize any damage to the follicles, to ensure a high survival rate when the follicles are transplanted.

  • Preparation of the Recipient Region

Tiny incisions are made in the recipient area for the hair follicles to be implanted. The depth, angle, and direction are controlled very carefully with the incisions, to ensure the hair growth pattern will be natural.

  • Implementation of Grafts

The hair follicles that have been extracted are now implanted into the recipient area where the incisions were done. Placing each graft is done with precision, making sure the implants are in the correct angle and direction to ensure natural-looking results.

  • Post-Procedure Care

After the grafts are implanted, your scalp will be cleaned and a bandage is applied to protect the donor area. Instructions will be given on how to care for your scalp.

For injections and pain, antibiotics may be provided to treat the symptoms.

Patients will need to avoid any strenuous activities and direct sunlight for a period of time to protect the grafts.

  • Follow-Up

Regular follow-ups are scheduled to monitor progress and any issues. During the first few days of your surgery, small scabs will form around the grafts. Naturally, these fall off within a week or two. You may see some redness and swelling around the grafts. However, these symptoms are normal and go away within a few days.

After 2-4 weeks of the surgery, the hair that was transplanted may shed. However, this is normal and the follicles are just entering a resting phase before new hair starts to grow.

You will see new hair grow within 3-4 months after your hair transplant surgery. Complete results can be seen after 12-18 months.

  • Long Term Care

It is essential for you to regularly attend your follow-up appointments to ensure no problems arise and to track your progress. Your provider may recommend hair care products and treatments to support your hair growth. To ensure the longevity of your hair transplant, it is important to maintain the health of your scalp and hair.

  • Which One Should You Choose?

Both procedures have their pros and cons. FUE is great for patients who would like a less invasive procedure, faster recovery time, and less scarring. FUT is great for patients who need a large number of grafts and do not mind linear scars.

What is ARTAS?

ARTAS is an advanced, state-of-the-art technology created to increase the precision and effectiveness for hair transplant procedures. This AI machine was developed in collaboration with leading hair transplant physicians and researchers. ARTAS has the ability to use cutting-edge robotics and AI to ensure results look natural with minimal discomfort and downtime.

The Benefits of ARTAS

  • Reduced Downtime: ARTAS reduces recovery time in comparison to traditional hair transplant methods. Almost all patients can go back to their regular activities shortly after their procedure
